Beyond pension and benefits, TIPI operates another line of business in the property and casualty division, prioritizing Indigenous employment. This division extends comprehensive services from property coverage and community asset protection to commercial liability and Directors & Officers insurance. This positions TIPI as a distinguished brokerage that helps its clients manage risks and protect their most valuable assets.

TIPI’s personal care for its clients and plan members cannot be overstated. In one instance, the company assisted a member who had tragically passed away in an accident. During this challenging time, TIPI personally helped facilitate the accidental death claims and pension claims processes. This involved the timely completion of claim forms, liaising with the medical examiner’s office to submit the necessary information to the

Learning how to prevent fires is one of the most important things you can do for your home and your community.

Many homes and buildings are lost or damaged in communities due to negligence, which could be anything from being careless with discarding cigarette butts or not cleaning your dryer lint traps after each load.

Read on for some fire safety tips to help you protect your home and communities from preventable fires.

           Extinguish and discard cigarettes properly.

Make sure to completely extinguish before discarding.

Cigarettes and other smoking materials that are not properly extinguished can still burn undetected and smoulder for days before starting a fire.

The most common cause of fires from cigarettes have started from incorrectly extinguished smokes in planters around the house.

Limit use of outlet extenders or plug-in power bars.

Too many electronics plugged into to an outlet or power bar can quickly overload an electrical circuit. This can cause sparks, smoke, and lead to a fire that can do much damage to your home.

Never plug in a space heater into a power bar or extension cord.

Remove lint from your dryer filter after every use.

A clogged filter and lint trap make your dryer less efficient, reduces the airflow needed to keep heat from building up in vents, and forces lint onto the heating coils.

Store towels, rags, and containers of cooking oil well away from the stove, and always turn off the stove before you leave the room.

Be sure to keep anything flammable away from the stove, especially if it is turned on.

Never leave the room with the stove left on.

Have your chimney cleaned at least twice a year if you have a fireplace or wood stove.

Without regular cleaning, tar-like byproducts of burning wood—called creosote—can build up in the chimney.

Creosote is highly flammable, so the more creosote build-up in your chimney, the higher risk there is for chimney fires.

           Reduce risks when burning candles.

            Never leave burning candles unattended.

Always extinguish all candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

Never burn candles on or near anything that can catch fire (e.g. curtains, bedding, clothing, etc.).

Always keep candles out of reach of children and pets, and always somewhere they cannot be knocked over.

Purchase a fire extinguisher for your home.

You should have the right tools handy in the event of a small fire before it grows to something bigger and out of control.

When purchasing, always check for certification marks (such as ULC), the size of the fire it is designed for, and ensure that you can comfortably hold and operate it.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are values that every business should uphold and strive for when it comes to the inclusion of different groups.

, an Indigenous-owned and led economic development engine, understands this necessity to make not only Indigenous voices heard in business, but to create spaces where everyone can thrive. DEI doesn’t stop at just gender equality but extends to consider how individuals from different backgrounds and abilities are included and represented across all layers of an organization.

           Representation matters

At TIPI, it is believed that DEI doesn’t stop at gender or race equality but must extend to Indigenous engagement and reconciliation in a meaningful way.

“DEI is about enriching the fabric of an organization through focused efforts on preparing a safe, respectful environment that aims to reduce barriers to success,” says Janice Gladue. “This means that leadership must be committed to examining systems, policies, and practices to identify these barriers. They must be open to challenge the status quo and to develop new ways of being and doing things. Change must be real to be impactful.”

Gladue is the chief operating officer (COO) of the TIPI Group of Companies, an Indigenous-owned economic development engine that drives capacity, manages risks, and enables transformation for its communities and clients. The group of companies currently employs nearly 100 people and has operations across the country.

Corporate diversity, equity and inclusion efforts often focus on addressing gaps in representation through recruitment and then fall short in retention. One of the pitfalls an organization may experience is that they do not dig deep to define what successful DEI and Indigenous Engagement looks, feels and means for their organization. Not adjusting their culture and practices and not having clarity on what equity means often results in their efforts running flat. Setting goals that amount to filling quotas will not amount to longevity and success.

“Truth and Reconciliation is foundational to successful corporate Indigenous Engagement initiatives. Committing to learning the truth of the history and experience of Indigenous people should be a starting point for Leadership in order to drive success within their teams and organizations,” Gladue says. “At TIPI we understand what it takes to truly drive change in this regard. TIPI was initially created in 1999 for the sole purpose of closing the gap in representation of Indigenous people as insurance professionals and to change the experience and access of Indigenous communities to insurance coverage.”

           Building something new

“There weren’t a lot of Indigenous people in the industry at that time, so we had to build them up. This meant we had to find good people who had core skills, abilities, and some business acumen and then we invested in their training and development through mentorship and support,” says Gladue. The investment of time and the active work put towards their partners and employees is why TIPI created an industry space for Indigenous communities.

Today, TIPI has grown beyond its insurance offerings and has expanded its services to include human resources consulting, talent acquisition services, group benefit administration, and a Truth and Reconciliation for business initiative. Who they are and what they do are grounded in principles that honour and advance Truth & Reconciliation in their work and relationships.

           Leading the way

In a world where there are many companies who need help on Indigenous inclusion and engagement through DEI, TIPI fills a niche and bridges a gap within other companies and industries. Legacy Bowes, another organization within TIPI Group of Companies, has Indigenous staff as well as staff that are experienced within Indigenous communities. “The value of leaning in to build our workforce that is at our feet and that is representative of particularly Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta, only makes good business sense,” says Gladue.

TIPI works to talk about how to include the impacts of trauma and mental health in employees. This is important when it comes to their work with DEI, as the perspectives of their staff primarily reflect Indigenous ideas and perspectives on diversity that currently are still emerging and developing in a corporate dialogue. TIPI innovates the industry standard for establishing DEI amongst their companies because they are by and for Indigenous and minority groups, thus making their work integral the building blocks of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

           Showing up

The meaningful and intentional application of DEI within business and policy is what brings minority voices forward and allows employees to thrive, and also allows for groups to express themselves with integrity and authenticity within business. That is what makes the work of companies like TIPI integral to our evolving business world. By building themselves up with integrity and setting an example, TIPI not only closes the gap, but builds a strong bridge for voices to be elevated in the industries they work in.

Disability insurance is a wage replacement benefit. Its purpose is to support employees if they are unable to work due to illness or accident while they recover with a goal of them returning to work. Disability insurance is not meant to be used as a lifetime support.

There are many illnesses and injuries covered through disability, but it is important to determine whether the illness or injury prevents you from performing the duties of your job. In order for your coverages to be approved, you must meet the definition of disability as defined in your group policy.

5 Steps you need to take to make a Property & Casualty Insurance Claim

There are many reasons why you might need to make a Property & Casualty insurance claim. A fire or flood could damage your property; your business could be burglarized or frauded; one of your staff members could get into a collision while using a company vehicle.

Here are the steps you should take if you need to make a Property & Casualty insurance claim:

            Prevent further damage

If needed, call emergency services for emergent situations. If required, call emergency restoration services to prevent the situation from worsening. For example, you would call emergency restoration services to pump out water and dry a building out in the event of a flood to prevent the development of mold.

File a report with the authorities

In some incidents, we will require an official report from the authorities to be able to process your claim. For example, in the case of a fire, we will need a report from the Fire Marshal and in the case of a crime like fraud or burglary, we will require a police report.

            Call your account executive

As soon as possible, notify your insurance broker of the incident. Provide as much detail as possible about the circumstances and the assets that have been damaged or lost. If it is safe to do so, take photos of the damage. Be sure to provide a main point of contact for the individual who will be handling the claim.

            Await an adjuster

After you make a claim, you will be contacted by an adjuster who will set up a time to take a statement, will determine the amount of damage or loss, and will go over a proof of loss. The adjuster will hire an appraiser or contractor to assess the loss.

            Get quotes

Get quotes (usually three) for repairs or replacements. Submit them before beginning repairs or replacing assets. Once completed, the adjuster will contact you regarding the settlement of your claim and payment.

Be sure to spend time familiarizing yourself with your policy to ensure you understand your coverages, rights, and responsibilities. Contact your account executive to review your policy to ensure all coverages of properties, assets, and operations are up-to-date.
Stem the flow: Reversing economic leakage from Indigenous communities

, a Winnipeg-based conglomerate with subsidiaries in insurance, human resource management and reconciliation training, says his challenge represents a more than billion-dollar opportunity.

Economic leakage occurs when money earned inside a community or jurisdiction flows to outside service providers. It’s impossible to calculate the extent of leakage from all First Nations across the country but Ballantyne says in the insurance industry alone, “millions and millions” of dollars in fees and commissions are paid out to non-Indigenous providers.

“Indigenous communities suffer the worst economic leakage in the country. We’re making a small dent in that to change the story, but we have a long way to go,” he says.

Ballantyne believes the average Canadian thinks First Nations receive billions of dollars in federal funding, but they can’t understand why their communities aren’t more prosperous. While there’s no denying the initial capital flows, he says money in First Nations doesn’t circulate in the same way as it does elsewhere in Canada.

In non-First Nations communities, money changing hands between consumers, businesses and service providers circulates three to five times before it goes elsewhere, he says.

“Typically, a dollar comes in (to First Nations) and 90 cents flows directly to outside businesses, including consultants and lawyers. It doesn’t circulate. There isn’t the same infrastructure. If the average Canadian community sees a dollar circulate two to three times, it’s a fraction of that in Indigenous communities,” he says. “The way to change that is have those dollars change hands more times within the community. That’s a guiding principle of why our company exists.”

Indeed, preventing economic leakage is one of TIPI’s primary focuses and permeates virtually everything the company does through its value chain.

“When we do business with suppliers, we look at who we’re using to buy our jackets and our swag. We want to use Indigenous companies and people. That’s the core of who we are,” he says.

On the company’s group insurance and group pension business, TIPI has moved further up its value chain. In the traditional model, a broker would ask large insurance providers for quotes. TIPI has taken steps to become its own middleman, collecting premiums and paying insurers.

“That gives us more power and control to be able to challenge the status quo,” he says.

One problem that Ballantyne sees in the Indigenous economy is the notion that each business should be community owned. That’s not how things work in the greater Canadian economy, where most successful businesses were started by entrepreneurs. He believes the Indigenous economy should be a mix of both.

Employees at community-owned enterprises don’t have the same incentives to provide exemplary services as their entrepreneurial brethren, he says.

“If the City of Winnipeg owned a gas station, would employees care if the pumps were full and could gas up their customers? It’s different when you’re an entrepreneur. You’d say, ‘I’m going to make damn sure there’s gas and we ensure every customer’s windows are clean. We haven’t got that right yet,” he says.

TIPI is constantly on the lookout to do things differently than they’ve been done traditionally and that’s contributing to less leakage.

“We’re insuring communities’ land claims with the federal government. If they’ve got an unsettled land claim, it’s expensive to hire researchers and lawyers to fight the government. We’ve built a new insurance model that will insure those costs and give the community access to a line of credit and access to capital. That’s all instead of paying a non-Indigenous law firm millions of dollars,” he says.

Perhaps the quickest way Indigenous businesses can start to reduce economic leakage is simply to be aware of their landlord. Ballantyne says TIPI does its best to ensure its subsidiaries hang up their shingle in urban reserves. For example, its head office is located in the Indigenous-owned Peguis Business Centre on Portage Avenue.

The industries of banking and insurance have a longstanding, western ideology-based tradition. When you think of banking, insurance, and financial institutions there is likely a set image in your mind as to what banking and insurance are and are not. But as Canada and society move forward there are more and more challenges to traditional approaches to long set industry standards.

began its journey in the Canadian financial landscape in 1996. There were two main driving forces that led to the bank’s opening, first, the need for a bank to serve Indigenous clients, especially as the Indigenous communities started to experience their own economic growth. The second factor was identifying that while these communities were starting to experience growth, there were also issues that they were facing—issues that were not being addressed by the traditional banking and finance worlds.

The founders of FNBC had a vision to develop a federally-chartered bank serving Indigenous and non-Indigenous people throughout Canada. The bank was conceived and developed by Indigenous People, for Indigenous People as an important step toward Indigenous economic self-sufficiency. “In 1996, we founded First Nations Bank of Canada to bring both financial and social returns to Indigenous People and communities who were under-served by existing financial services options,” explains Keith Martell, president and CEO,

The challenges that Indigenous people face are sometimes obvious, such as the Indian Act setting out that reserve land is owned by the Crown, which prevents banks and lending institutions from recognizing it as security. Other barriers do not relate to laws or legalities, but to physical locations, distance, and diversity. Remote northern locations are tricky to access, sometimes costing plane rides of $800 or more, and mainstream financial institutions either cannot, or do not want to, deal with accommodations. Finally, until more recently, there hasn’t been a lot of diversity and inclusion in the banking and insurance sectors.

Today, most of the customers of the FNBC are Indigenous, 60 to 75 per cent of staff, and 89 per cent of shareholders are also Indigenous Peoples. “[We strive to provide a place that] makes people comfortable to do banking there,” explains Martell. And it’s not just the customers that they want to feel comfortable. This past March, FNBC was once again named one of Saskatchewan’s Top Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc. for providing its employees with an exceptional place to work.

This might be working to start programs to help identify and report areas in a community that lack proper fire protection, working to help alleviate housing shortages, or being a third-party go-between for communities and the government for things like grants and funding.

Nathan Ballantyne, CEO of TIPI-IMI, said, “[TIPI-IMI] wants to offer our services as a total community coverage and wrap our arms around our clients.” One of the biggest issues that Ballantyne identified and worked towards combating early on with TIPI-IMI was the concept of “economic leakage”. This is where a community has money or funding but must turn outside of the community for goods and services, thus leading to leakage from the local economy. If the community can put the funds back into circulation, growth will follow.

It was difficult work, Ballantyne noted, but he is grateful for those who walked with them, had the hard conversations, and worked to stop the economic leakage. And while TIPI-IMI had entered the financial field on the defensive, with all the work that has been done the tides are now beginning to turn.

“As an Indigenous company, it honestly feels that we have to work harder than a non-Indigenous company due to preconceptions and stigma,” said Ballantyne. He noted that there is a pressure to feel the need to prove themselves more than others, but that this pressure has also lit the fire that has driven TIPI-IMI to be as successful as they are today.

Fundamentally the way business is conducted around the world is changing and moving forward in big ways. The global and Canadian economies are seeing driving changes. While there is much work still to be done, groups like First Nations Bank and TIPI-IMI are finding that they now have a place at the table. By being able to use their voices and raise concerns, there is now the potential help to shape the future of finance.

Canada is in the midst of a critical chapter in its history. The country is coming to terms with how it came to be what it is today and who was tragically and brutally impacted by the creation of the nation we call home. As we collectively acknowledge and address what can be done to rectify the past and move forward together, there is a company that has always embraced its inherent Indigeneity while serving its clients and living its Indigenous values every day.

, the venture got its start in 1999 as an insurance brokerage working with traditionally underserved First Nations in Manitoba. “We identified that Indigenous communities were often underrepresented, oversold or had poor access to insurance,” says Janice Gladue, COO at TIPI Group of Companies. “The work began with Swampy Cree Tribal Council as a partner to start to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and provide stronger access to insurance markets and coverages. Building capacity in the sector and creating wealth for First Nations were also key goals.” Little did they know that the idea would be revolutionary.

TIPI and TIPI-IMI Insurance Partners worked to address the gaps in the insurance market to serve Canada’s Indigenous communities and peoples by embracing their culture. The company’s products and services are developed for and by the people who want them—whether you need a conventional policy or not, they can help.

“Traditional insurance coverage did not address the needs of Indigenous people,” says Gladue. “We sought the changes needed to make it work.” For example, typical insurance coverage requires that a property be rebuilt in the same location within one year of a loss such as fire or flood. In Indigenous communities, that is unrealistic for both cultural and logistical reasons. Indigenous culture does not look favourably on rebuilding on the exact spot of a loss, and often, materials and labour needed to rebuild take longer to arrive in communities. “We worked with industry partners to have these changes made to policies to allow for this,” says Gladue. “Some simple modifications made insurance coverage possible.”

The company also built capacity in the insurance sector for Indigenous insurance professionals to start and build careers in the industry. “Having professionals who are Indigenous providing services to Indigenous communities and families is also huge part of what we do as a company,” says Gladue. “Plus, our success always goes back to our community owners. We’re majority Indigenous-owned, and our profits go back to the people we serve to create even more success.”

It’s in our DNA,” says Gladue. “I think of all of them, friendship is the one that makes us stand out. It’s part and parcel of our Indigenous roots.” TIPI’s commitment to friendship is more than building a relationship with a client. It’s about being there through the peaks and the valleys, and knowing that no matter what, you’re there for each other. “Friendship is when you’re there for the most difficult times, and in insurance, that’s when you’ll likely be dealing with us,” she says. “It’s just the way we do business.”

There’s no shortage of boosters who are cheering on the TIPI Group of Companies in its bid to win a prestigious national award.

“Our company has 60 First Nation communities that are part of our ownership,” said Nathan Ballantyne, who has served as the CEO of the TIPI Group of Companies for the past 12 years. “We act on their behalf in terms of economic development.”

The TIPI Group of Companies is also one of two finalists for Cando’s 2022 Individual Private Sector Business award. The other finalist in this category is Walker Home Construction, based in the Yukon capital of Whitehorse.

The winner will be announced at this year’s Cando Conference, scheduled for May 16-19. This event will be held at the Dakota Dunes Resort, located at Whitecap Dakota First Nation in Saskatchewan.

The Individual Private Sector Business award is one of three that will be presented at the conference. The Economic Development Officer of the Year will also be chosen at the conference. And so too will the winning nominee in the Community of the Year category.

“With such a large ownership group sometimes it’s hard to let them know what’s going on,” Ballantyne said.

But those First Nations, which make up the ownership group, are well aware the company is a finalist for the Cando award.

“They’re obviously very excited,” Ballantyne said.

The TIPI Group of Companies was launched more than 20 years ago and includes various services which are offered to those in more than 300 Indigenous communities in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Its entities include insurance brokerages, a third-party administrator that creates and manages a benefits platform titled the TIPI Care Plan and an organizational and human resources consultancy company. The mission for the TIPI Group of Companies is to engage organizations and communities in order to manage risks and protect their economic well-being and health via customized services and products.

Since it was launched the TIPI Group of Companies has certainly experienced its share of growth over the years.

“We started off with six employees,” Ballantyne said of the company. “And we’re going to break the 100 employees (mark) this summer,”

Ballantyne said, adding the TIPI Group of Companies has a large percentage of Indigenous employees. “About 50 per cent of them are Indigenous."

Ballantyne believes the TIPI Group of Companies is a success story which is applauded in First Nations across the country.

“Communities deal with so many other issues like suicide, drugs and gangs,” he said. “Their world is so different than ours.”

Ballantyne added officials with the TIPI Group of Companies are not simply resting on their laurels. That’s because they are currently working on the details of another major acquisition, expected to be announced by late May.

“It’s a good-sized deal and will create some more new jobs,” he said.
